A rent supplement is a subsidy paid directly to landlords in private non-profit,
co-operative, and privately owned buildings to bridge the gap between the
monthly market rent charged for a unit and the rent-geared-to-income portion
paid by the tenant.
Housing Connections administers the Rent Supplement Program with private market
landlords in Toronto while the City administers the Rent Supplement Program in
the non-profit sector.
We conduct unit inspections to qualify rent supplement landlords. There are
about 2900 units in this program with about 130 private market landlords.
Rent supplement landlords must fill units using the central waiting list, unless
exempt by the City. When there is a vacancy we contact the next person on the
waiting list on behalf of the landlord to set up an appointment.
We review tenants' eligibility to remain in a rent-geared-to-income unit with an
annual rent review.
To apply, add rent supplement sub zones to your Housing Connections' application
and you will be added to the waiting list for all rent supplement units within
each sub zone you choose. See the rent supplement sub zones in our online
interactive housing listings.
